"Our plastic pollution problem is completely out of control. We know it's bad, and so does the company that sold us the junk", Samsung acknowledged in an official statement. The company announced that it would join the list of companies abandoning plastic packaging in favor of sustainable and environmentally friendly materials.
Starting in 2019, Samsung will use recyclable or bioplastics and paper materials to replace the plastic packaging currently used for its products and accessories, including molded pulp and bioplastics in place of plastic bags and trays.
"To improve product packaging, Samsung Electronics has formed a task force on innovative packaging concepts, including design development, procurement, marketing and quality control, to develop and implement its sustainability goals," Samsung said in the statement.
Samsung also noted that plastic bags used to protect large products such as televisions and refrigerators would be replaced by "plastic bags containing recycled materials and bioplastics, which are made from plastic waste and non-fossil fuel materials such as starch or sugar cane".
In its statement, the company pledged to use 500,000 tons of recycled plastic and recycle 7.5 tons of waste products by 2030.
Last year, Samsung Electronics announced that it planned to use 100% renewable energy in its factories and facilities in the U.S., Europe and China by 2020.
Samsung Electronics is one of the world's largest producers of electronics products and components, and packaging waste is on the rise. As a global tech giant, any move away from plastic packaging is a welcome shift.
