Studies of the nutritional needs of young athletes are sparse and often consist mostly of surveys of differences among adolescents. Parents and young athletes need to know that some supplements have been found to contain high levels of pollution and harmful substances. Young athletes need to learn what foods are good for energy, how to eat them during the race, how to replenish them after the race, and when and what foods to eat.

Protein and Creatine

Young athletes have higher dietary protein requirements. But if they eat a healthy balanced diet, they don't need protein and won't benefit from it. Athletes who burned more energy ate more and therefore increased their protein intake. Recent studies have shown that two to three times the RDA for protein may be optimal during the time when athletes generally practice caloric restriction to improve fat-free quality.


Hydration affects athletic performance more than any other nutritional requirement. Studies show that children lose heat more easily than adults because they have a higher ratio of body surface area to body weight. Adults and young adults who rehydrate before activities typically experience reduced energy, cognitive impairment, and endurance. It's important to hydrate before, after, and after a workout to replace the water and electrolytes lost through sweating.

Anabolic Steriod

Anabolic steroids are illegal drugs taken without a doctor's prescription. Most athletes use steroids in their sport to increase muscle size and strength, while others just want to appear more muscular. Teenage athletes need to be aware of the possible side effects of this supplement, including stunting in children and adolescents, serious and irreversible long-term heart problems, skin and other organs.

Vitamins and Minerals

Young athletes do not need vitamin and mineral supplements if they take a healthy and balanced diet. Low iron levels can lead to decreased athletic performance, but high iron levels or any other mineral or vitamin can't improve athletic performance.
