How Foreign Yogurt Brands Have Taken the Chinese Market by Storm

A report from consulting firm ASKCI reveals that the market for yogurt in China has outpaced that of milk, exceeding 11.9 billion RMB in 2017 with an 18% CAGR. The report forecasts that annual revenue in 2018 will be in excess of 14 billion RMB.

In order to stay competitive, global dairy enterprises have made substantial investments in China. However, despite the obvious opportunities awaiting international brands, numerous challenges still exist, namely, Chinese consumers’ overwhelming preference for flavored products. Therefore, to meet market demand, producers have adjusted their product line to increasingly emphasis flavored yogurt.

Chobani has taken the lead in the Greek yogurt sector, by drawing attention to its additive-free products, and introducing new flavors and formulas. Chobani launched 19 new flavored and low-fat yogurt products in 2016 and 2017, an aggressive attempt to capture market share from traditional giants Danone and Yoplait.

Australian brand Noosa has introduced three new flavored yogurt products, which contains nuts and oatmeal, in acknowledgement of the growing share of health-conscious consumers. Furthermore, Noosa products contain trace ingredients that are beneficial for intestinal health.

Similarly, Greek dairy brand Mevgal recently launched a low-fat yogurt product containing including a range of ingredients with special nutritional value, including wolfberry and quinoa. Due to its relentless product innovation, Mevgal’s new products possess unique health advantages that improve immunity, strengthen kidney function, prevent heart attacks, and improve digestion.
